This page is a primer for accessing digitized images, using the Folger Shakespeare Library’s Dromio interface, and transcribing early modern manuscript recipe books.

1.      Go to transcribe.folger.edu

2.      Enter your name (FirstLast, with capitals and no spaces)

3.      Click the link for EMROC. This will take you to the list of folio pages (by manuscript) currently uploaded in Dromio for transcription

4.      For this transcribathon, we will begin with V.a.600, the recipe book of Lady Grace Castleton. Scroll down until you see the pages under this book.

• You will notice that each folio page has its own link. When we are ready to begin transcribing, you will choose a page and click the link for it.
• PLEASE NOTE: each page will receive three keyings (three separate transcriptions). Next to the link for each folio page, you will see “X started; X complete.” This note refers to the number of keyings each page already has underway and will indicate whether the page has been completed. BE SURE ONLY to click on a folio page that has either 0, 1, or 2 before “started” in order to maximize our work and avoid too much redundancy.
• Once you click a folio page, you will in effect be reserving it for your use as a transcriber.

5.      Once you click the link, you will be taken to the page in Dromio with the transcription window (it is the green bordered box that appears) that includes buttons that serve as xml shortcuts. To know more about the function of each button, you may go to the ? button in the window. Here is what you will find there.
